Guinness World Records just turned 70 (the first book came out in 1955), and to celebrate, they released a list of 70 world records that NO ONE has ever attempted. That means the bar is basically set at zero. And honestly, if there’s any city where folks could knock a few of these off, it’s right here in Lubbock, Texas.

High Fives, Burritos, and Balloon Sprints

Think about this one: “Most high fives in 30 seconds.” You could set that record on the Texas Tech campus during football season before kickoff. Stand outside The Jones and you’d have a hundred Red Raiders ready to smack hands in about ten seconds.

Or how about the “fastest time to make a burrito.” Ever been through Taco Villa, Rosa’s, or any of the other bazillion burrito places around here at lunchtime? Somebody in this town has the skills to lock that one down.

And the “fastest 10-meter sprint while holding a balloon between your knees”? I’m thinking halftime entertainment at a Red Raider basketball game. Throw a couple of students on the court and let’s make history!

Food Records Are Right Up Our Alley

We’ve got “most Pringles eaten in one minute,” “most fortune cookies eaten in one minute,” and even “most anchovies eaten in one minute.” That last one might not draw a crowd, but you know someone in Lubbock is weird enough to go for it after a night boozin' in the Depot.

Records Made for the Hub City

Want something more family-friendly? How about the “longest paperclip chain in one minute” or “longest duration balancing a spoon on your nose.” You could set those in your office during lunch break!

And my personal favorite: “most whoopee cushions sat on in one minute by a team of two.” If that doesn’t scream “Lubbock’s next live morning radio stunt,” I don’t know what does.

Your Shot at History

Guinness even set up a Record Selector online where you answer five questions and they’ll tell you which unclaimed record is your best shot. But here’s the thing: these aren’t for superhumans. They’re wide open. And Lubbock has the creativity, the food, and the flat-out stubbornness to own a few.
