Texas Ag Commissioner Sid Miller Cites Puzzling Source On Twitter
Republican Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller recently quoted a controversial figure on his X account (FKA: Twitter), purportedly from the late rapper Tupac Shakur. However, it's possible the rapper never actually said those lines. It's a big controversy online.
But let's put that aside for a moment and revel in how weird this is anyway. Here's the tweet, or X or whatever you call it now:
The first place of befuddlement I land on is the (?) after "May he rest in peace." Is he questioning whether or not Tupac is dead, or whether he deserves to rest in peace? I'm guessing the former but it's vague.
Given a little context of Tupac's life, this "homage" gets stranger, as Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur, was an extremely influential member of the Black Panther Party in the 60s and 70s. Therefore, not exactly in line with modern Republican politics.
Tupac himself was a political figure, with politically charged lyrics, “I sit in history but I’m not learning anything. There’s just a paragraph about slavery & Dr. King.” He was also a very controversial figure while alive, with media outlets decrying a person they saw as an inciter and perpetrator of violence.
I doubt Miller was considering Tupac's personal history, or the history of gangsta rap when he posted this. Tupac's legacy, it seems, has met the same fate as Marilyn Monroe's- a complicated and tragic figure being repurposed into Mall posters with catchy feel-good phrases beneath their portrait.
Of course, many of the comments fail to disappoint, my favorite being the gif of Prince shaking his head with the text, "This is exactly why doves cry."
