World of Beer was like a home away from home for a very short time.

I hosted the Lubbock Laugh Off at World of Beer. The event was already a success, bringing capacity crowds to the Freak Tiki. After some time away while divesting from the Tiki to open Bat City in Austin, I was asked to bring the Lubbock Laugh Off back.

The event was huge from the start. Every single night we hosted it, they had to turn people away, and it really hurts when a business has to tell folks there’s no room at the inn.

The food was amazing. We’d snack on hot pretzels and loaded tater tots, or come hungry for some fantastic steaks. In fact, I loved their steaks so much that I started copying the way they cooked them at home.

The Room Was Always Ready For A Crowd

The full-room P.A. was pretty awesome, though not quite loud enough, and a little persnickety. It was serviceable, and if the crowd was paying attention, people could hear the laughs all the way to the back.

The truth is, over dozens and dozens of events, we never had a bad night, bad food, or bad service. There was a problem, though. Apparently, World of Beer was staffing up for our events, and things were lacking a bit the rest of the time. This gave us the illusion that the place was always rockin’.

As for casual folks who dropped by during non-event times, many Lubbock folks found the place lacking in some areas. It’s just crazy how the same place could be five stars one Saturday out of the month, then one or two stars the rest of the time.

There also seemed to be some ownership changes that confused things even more. I can’t really speak to that.

I can only say that for the RockShow’s Lubbock Laugh Off, the place was perfect every time, and that’s why it makes the list as one of the Places We Miss.
