Places We Miss: The Buffalo Beano Company
The Buffalo Beano Company didn’t just sell products—it changed lives and gave people a glimpse of something bigger.
These days, you can’t drive across Lubbock without spotting a handful of smoke shops. But back then, there was really just one. And if you walked in, you probably weren’t asking about anything “extra”—you were there to check out the “tobacco pipes.” Everyone knew what was up.
The Buffalo Beano Company was what they called a “head shop,” but it was far more than that. It was a window into the counterculture happening far beyond the Hub City. Alongside Ralph’s Records and FMX radio, it helped define entire generations of Lubbock life.
More Than a Store—It Was an Experience
Walking into Buffalo Beano was stepping into another world.
You were likely greeted by one of two dogs—one of them possibly named Baxter—while tapestries lined the walls in full psychedelic glory. Kites hung from the ceiling, and every inch of the place was packed with strange, fascinating, and undeniably cool items.
Before it became mainstream, this was also the place to grab incense—often with the very specific intention of covering up the smell of that “special tobacco.”
Fighting for Counterculture in Lubbock
Buffalo Beano wasn’t just a shop—it was a battleground.
The store faced constant pressure from authorities, with raids and confiscations happening frequently. Despite that, it stood its ground, becoming a symbol of rebellion, expression, and independence in a town that didn’t always embrace those things.
The End of an Era on University Avenue
While the business had at least one other location over the years, the most iconic version sat at 801 University Avenue, right near Texas Tech.
It remained one of the last holdouts before the wave of redevelopment in the area finally pushed it out around 2003–2004. When it closed, it wasn’t just a business shutting down—it was the end of a chapter in Lubbock history.
Places We Miss: Lubbock’s Chinese Kitchen
Today, walking into a smoke shop is no big deal. But back then, stepping into Buffalo Beano felt like an adventure—and maybe even a quiet act of rebellion.
