Investigators believe foul play was not a factor in the death of a 3-month-old child at the Children’s Home of Lubbock.

The young girl was found unresponsive on the floor Monday morning by staff in the room she shared with her 17-year-old mother and older sibling. Lynn Harms, president of the home, said the child was found “in distress” and not breathing around 6:15 a.m.

She was taken to Covenant Women and Children’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Staff had entered the room to wake up the family for their morning routines.

Harms said circumstances of the death were still being investigated Tuesday, but believes the baby probably died from injuries suffered by falling from the mother’s bed. It marks the first infant death in the history of the home, which houses about 75 children and one other mother and child. The Children’s Home of Lubbock provides housing for children in need of help or foster care.
