Historic And Once Abandoned Hotel In Texas Aims To Re-Open, but When?
A historic and at one time forgotten about piece of Texas history is being restored to host people one again. It's a hotel that once brought in high profile celebrities like Clark Gable and Judy Garland. The Baker Hotel will soon have new life in the city of Mineral Wells.
Before The Great Depression, The Baker Hotel opened in Mineral Wells, Texas in 1929. According to PaperCityMag.com, The Baker welcomed guests from all over the world for over 25 yeas. But the economy finally caught up to The Baker and a decline led to it's closure in 1972. And according to multiple reports, the famous hotel was left to decay.
For years now, the Baker Hotel has been under renovation. It's also taken years to raise the funds needed to bring the historic building back to life. Not only have investors been raising money but also counting on federal historic tax credits. That means many historic parts of the hotel will be sticking around.
So how long until The Baker welcomes guests back? One facebook poster recently took to the Texas Back Roads Facebook Group and said that the hotel is hoping to get a $20 million loan. If they get it, The Baker will open in 2027, but it could be as late as 2028.
However, The Baker Hotel website still lists the reopening as Spring of 2026. Hopefully, it will be sooner rather than later. I, for one, can't wait to stay there.
