Texas Governor Greg Abbott this morning signed a number of bills that will work to reform Child Protective Services and the foster care system in Texas.

The four bills will add substantial backbone to child we;fare on Texas. HB 4 will provide new financial assistance to caregivers of foster children, particularly those caring for children with a distant relation. HB 5 establishes the Department of Family Protective Services as a standalone state agency. HB 7 reforms the court processes and procedures for child welfare suits, and SB 11 provides for the expansion of community based care.

Also, since last December an additional $150 million has been allocated to the DFPS in the state budget to improve foster care in the state.
