Fort Hood Shooting Survivor Recalls Incident During University Speech
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. (AP) — A western New York native who survived a mass shooting at an Army base in Texas last year has paid a visit to his hometown and college alma mater.
The Olean Times Herald reports that Maj. Patrick Miller was back in the Cattaraugus County village of Allegany this week and gave a talk at St. Bonaventure University.
The Iraq War veteran spent about an hour recounting the events of April 2, 2014, when he was one of 19 soldiers shot during a rampage by a fellow soldier at Fort Hood. Three soldiers died and Miller and 15 others were wounded. The gunman committed suicide.
Miller was hailed as a hero for helping wounded soldiers despite his own serious wounds.
He has since been reassigned to Fort Leavenworth in Kansas. He and his wife, Ashley, live in Kansas City.
