Jury selection in a bizarre aggravated assault trial caused by a disturbed father who believed his wife was cheating began today, January 5, 2016. The father allegedly abused his son and, as always, the devil is in the details.

Brent Bartel called dispatchers in December 2012, calmly explaining that he carved a pentagram into his 6-year-old son’s back with a box cutter because it was a “holy day.”

ABC News described the wounds as being as large as a basketball.

The Dallas Morning News obtained the 911 audio three years ago.

Bartel was initially charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second degree felony. Since then. Bartel’s case has bounced around the legal system.

He was diagnosed with schizophrenia and found too incompetent to stand trial, but a judge said he was well enough for the case to proceed last year, according to Fox 4 News in Dallas.
