A standing room only crowd watched the first day of the Mickey Patterson murder trial at the Lubbock County Courthouse today.

The 61 year-old Patterson is accused of killing fellow Lubbock State School employees of 51-year-old Kay Harrelson and 61-year-old Peggy Merimon in August 2006. He was arrested in Oregon in September 2009 and extradited to Lubbock shortly thereafter.

Among the witnesses called to the stand today: Kay Harrelson’s husband, the oldest daughter of Peggy Merimon and a Lubbock State School co-worker who was the last person to see Harrelson and Merimon alive.

The co-worker testified that she saw Harrelson and Merimon leave in a car with Mickey Patterson on August 9, 2006.  The women then became missing later that evening.

No physical evidence was presented by either side during the first day of Patterson's trial.  The trial will resume tomorrow morning at 9.
