It may have worked for West Virginia, but could splitting California in half really be the answer to solving southern California's problems?

Jeff Stone, a member of the Riverside County Board of Supervisors, wants Riverside and 12 other southern California counties to secede from the state and become South California, the 51st state in the nation. Stone's idea would address the fact that these southern California counties are much more conservative than the rest of the state.

The other board members have given Stone the go ahead to conduct a statewide meeting on the subject. Opponents of the plan say while the plan has some merit, it's very unrealistic and probably not the best way to resolve southern California's problems.

I gotta agree with the nay-sayers here. Yeah, theoretically this could happen, but I doubt it will really happen. I get that south and north California don't get along, but splitting up seems like kind of an extreme solution. And besides, would those 13 counties bring in enough money to fund its own state?

What do you think? Should southern California secede and become its own state?
