You may have noticed that it's been raining a bit lately in Lubbock. While that will be nice for our yards and water bills, it's led to some parks in Lubbock becoming saturated with water.

With the upcoming Independence Day weekend ahead, the folks at the City of Lubbock know that many people will be out using the numerous parks that we have in town. This 4th of July weekend, highs are only supposed to be in the low to mid 80s, which, for early July, is very pleasant. Normally, it seems like we're around 95-100 degrees and the 4th on Broadway event is hotter than ever.

But this year will be nice, and that means cookouts and friends and families gathering in our parks. All of this has led the City of Lubbock and the Parks and Recreation Department to send out a press release reminding citizens to keep their vehicles off the park lawns. Why? Because your giant truck could destroy the park, and we aren't going mudding right now.

From the City of Lubbock:

With damp ground across Lubbock and more rain in the forecast, the City of Lubbock Parks and Recreation Department reminds citizens that driving on park lawns causes ruts and compacts the soil, which can kill the grass. Driving on park turf is prohibited and unlawful in accordance with Sec. 16.01.004 (6) of the City Ordinances.

These areas are enjoyed by many citizens across the community. Please help to reduce damage by driving only on concrete or asphalt this holiday weekend.

So enjoy the parks, enjoy friends and family and cooking out. Just don't drive your vehicle onto the park.
