Braum's (also known by its formal name Braum's Ice Cream & Dairy Store) is moving closer to opening its first Lubbock location.

At Tuesday's Lubbock City Council meeting, Braum's is seeking a zoning change for an existing property at 8217 University Avenue.

Over the years, the restaurants South House and Moose Magoo's were housed in the building at that address. Braum's proposes changing the zoning for 8217 University to C-2, along with making the adjacent parking lot C-2 as well. If the zoning change is approved, Braum's would tear down the existing building and build a new one specifically designed for their restaurant. It would also include a drive-thru.

As shown on the graphic from the City of Lubbock Planning & Zoning Department, Braum's would utilize both sets of property designated in the black rectangles.

In the filings with the City of Lubbock, no timetable is stated for the tear down and re-build of the property. Planning & Zoning recommended to the city council approval for the change.

The Lubbock City Council would have to approve two readings of the proposed zoning change to make it official. The First Reading is scheduled for April 23, 2019, and the Second Reading on May 14, 2019.

According to the official Braum's website, they currently have approximately 300 locations across Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Missouri, and Arkansas. The closest locations to Lubbock are located in Canyon and Vernon.

Tuesday's Lubbock City Council meeting starts at 4:30 p.m.
