It's tough losing a local business. When that business has been around for 50 years, the community knows they are losing something special. And soon, the Outdoorsman in Lubbock will close.

We learned back in August that the Outdoorsman was planning on closing their doors for good. Online shopping and a rough economy were just too much for the owners to withstand. The current owners, who are the children of the original owners have battled personal losses and a changing economy. The Outdoorsman was started by their father who passed away in April of 2021. Their mother passed away in December of 2022. And since the current owners have been running the Outdoorsman and honoring their parents.

In the original announcement, the Outdoorsman had planned on staying open through Christmas and into early 2025. But on Monday, the Outdoorsman announced on Facebook that due to "amazing support" from customers, they had sold roughly 90% of their inventory and that the new final day will be on Saturday, December 21st. According to their Facebook post, starting December 9th their hours will be 10-5 every day until they close on the 21st.

The Outdoorsman also posted that they will be able to close debt-free, which the owners were happy to say that being debt-free was how they wanted to honor their dad who started the business.

From the Outdoorsman Facebook page:

The seasons come and go, and just like that…. The season of the Outdoorsman is coming to a close. Our initial plan was to make it through Christmas, then close after that. But, because of all the amazing support and people wanting a bargain we have sold through almost 90% of our inventory already, what a blessing. We will close a 50yr old family buinsess debt free and that’s what I wanted to be able do to honor my dad in the closing of his business. Our FINAL DAY TO SHOP WILL BE DECEMBER 21st 2024. On that day we will close our doors for the final time for shopping! Until then every thing in the store remains 75% OFF. Also starting next week Monday December 9th our hours will be 10-5 EVERY DAY until our last day on the 21st. Please come see us for a final time while you’re out shopping this Christmas season. Please know for those of you who are like family to us, we will miss seeing you and your families during the holidays season. We will be posting more picks of the few things we have left over the next couple of weeks so keep an eye out. Thank you to those of you that have been kind, faithful and such huge supporters of the OD! Without you, this business wouldn’t have made a 50 yr run. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF YOU!

You still have until the 21st of December to score some good deals at a long time Lubbock business.

Remember this Christmas season, to spend money locally when you can. Money spent locally, stays local. It helps employ local people and helps local businesses support local charities and activities.
