If you plan to drink for your New Year’s Eve celebrations, AAA Texas is offering an option to use as a last resort to avoid driving drunk.

AAA Texas is offering their free Tipsy Tow program from 6 p.m. Tuesday, December 31st through 6 a.m. Wednesday, January 1st.

Motorists, bartenders, restaurant managers, party hosts, or passengers of a drinking driver may call 1-800-AAA-HELP (1-800-222-4357) for a free tow home of up to 10 miles.

Callers can tell AAA Texas operators that they need a Tipsy Tow, and a regular AAA Texas-contracted roadside service truck will be dispatched.

The service excludes rides for passengers, and is restricted to a one-way, one-time ride for the driver. The destination is limited to the driver’s residence. Reservations are also not accepted for a tow, as it is intended to be a last resort.

Those receiving a Tipsy Tow can expect to pay the rate charged by the tow truck contractor for rides farther than 10 miles, and the passenger and tow truck driver should agree in advance what the excess mileage charges will be and the method of payment prior to providing the tow.

The best plan for those than plan to drink during the holiday is to designate a non-drinking sober driver, call for a cab, or plan for an overnight stay at wherever they plan to celebrate.

A DWI can cost between $13,000 to $24,000 in fines, legal fees, higher insurance rates, and substance abuse programs if convicted.
