5.1 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes West Texas
Did ya feel it? I certainly did here in Lubbock. I can also scratch something off of my bucket list: experience an earthquake while sitting on a rolling office chair (it's a great list, don't make fun of me).
At first, I thought my dog bumped into my chair, causing it to rock back and forth. I realized I was mistaken when I looked over and saw my dog sitting on the opposite side of the room... spooky.
5.1 Magnitude Earthquake
So, I wasn't going insane! In fact, a large portion of West Texas also felt some degree of tremors last night at 7:40p.
Just north of Midland, the source of the quake seems to have caused a ripple effect, sending shockwaves into the Hill Country.
To make things even better, this earthquake is reportedly the third Texas quake since 2017 exceeding 5.0 magnitude.
Shockwaves were even felt in parts of Austin and San Antonio. Quite the groundbreaker, this one.
Recent Quakes in Texas
Wanna know what's weird? There was a small 2.9 magnitude earthquake just one hour prior to last night's whopper. This smaller quake, west of Pecos, had nowhere near the reach of the one near Midland.
Of course, I would be remiss if I failed to mention Texas' worst earthquake in history in Valentine, TX.
Clocking in at a mind-blowing 6.5 on the Richter scale, this quake in 1931 goes down in infamy as the most devastating in Texas history.
