A four-year-old is recovering in a hospital after being attacked by his family’s pet mountain lion in Odessa.

CBS 7 in Odessa reports the mountain lion was in its cage when it snagged the child, inflicting cuts and puncture wounds before it could be fended off. After the incident, the 150 pound cat was taken into custody by animal control and euthanized.

The owner of the animal received a fine for failing to provide proper vaccinations. The body will be tested for rabies and other diseases. Residents in Ector County are allowed to keep such animals as pets, but must keep them vaccinated and in suitable cages.
