On the Wednesday edition of The Chad Hasty Show, Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples spoke with Chad Hasty about his campaign for Texas Lieutenant Governor.

Recently, Staples has been campaigning across the state of Texas on a bus tour. He said that Texans are concerned about the future of their state, especially with the implementation of Obamacare, the spread of Medicaid and increased dependency on the government. He added that Texans are wanting a fighter as their next Lieutenant Governor, and that his experience as Agriculture Commissioner and working with the legislature makes him the fighter Texas is looking for.

When asked about his thoughts on Proposition 6, an amendment which takes two billion dollars out of the Texas "rainy day" fund for water projects, Staples said he was in favor of the amendment. He explained that as long as it was guaranteed that the money would be used for water projects only, this amendment will help get new water projects moving in the state of Texas.

"I'm going to be voting for Proposition 6...and here's why: as Commissioner of Agriculture, I know this drought is real. I know that agriculture suffers first and worst. I have also dealt with dozens of communities that are going to be without water within 180 days. This movement will not create debt for the state, It will help get projects up and running quicker. As Lieutenant Governor though, we need to make sure that that two billion dollars is being used for new water resources, and to develop more water availability."

However, Staples did agree that the rainy day fund should not be used as a slush fund.

Staples was also asked about his vote on a 2001 bill that would have allowed the Department of Public Safety to accept foreign birth certificates and foreign passports as valid forms of ID to obtain a driver's license. Staples argued that both his vote on the bill and the intent of the bill itself has been mischaracterized, and that he is staunchly opposed to any sort of benefits for illegal immigrants.
