Earlier this week, former Texas Congressman Sam Johnson passed away. He fought in two wars and was instrumental in creating the Vietnam Center Archive at Texas Tech, which was renamed in his honor three years ago.

Rebekah Tolley produced a follow up documentary on three Texans who served in the Vietnam War.

Col. Mike Mullane has received a number of awards, including the Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross, Legion of Merit, and the NASA Space Flight Medal. He has also been inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame.

Sichan Siv escaped the Cambodian killing fields in 1976 and settled in Connecticut. He later served as U.S. Ambassador to the United States from 2001 until 2006.

Maj. Gen. Winfield is responsible for leading the Department of Defense’s worldwide commitment to the fullest possible accounting of Americans missing in action from all conflicts.

A special presentation will be given by the Vietnamese Student Association, and traditional Vietnamese food will be served.

The commemoration will, among other things, thank and honor the veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice on behalf of a grateful nation, including personnel held as Prisoners of War or listed as Missing in Action.

Rutan flew more than 325 combat missions will serving in the Air Force in Vietnam. He was also the first person to fly nonstop around the world without refueling in 1986.

The Vietnam Center was the first U.S. institution to establish a formal relationship with Vietnam.
