"Public safety is about letting every citizen know. (The cellphone) isn't a foolproof device...but the advantage that were going after is that its another tool in the toolbox. It's another way to protect the citizens," Jeff said.

"I think what we approved and what will come back before us maintains a good balance of respecting the history of our downtown, but at the same time being able to provide streets that are drivable and that are going to be cost effective to maintain in the future," Massengale said.

When asked if he thought that this was a bad time to be taking on such a responsibility in the midst of the pandemic, Griffith explained that the city has been involved and working with TXDOT for several months, that they felt confident that it was in proper condition, and that everything has been met as far as ownership goes.

Griffith was asked if the city council, in any way, would have any sort of lowering of the funding for the police department, to which he strongly stated, "Absolutely not. Not even a question...It's not even a topic in my opinion."

"We will continue to monitor this. We don't want, as I mentioned yesterday during the meeting, we do not want to close down our city. That is not our intent. And we don't want to put fear into citizens. What we're trying to do is make sure that everybody understands social distancing from each other... We have plenty of soap, we have plenty of water, and everybody needs to continue to wash their hands," Griffith said.

"Here's the good news: We may be late, but we're under budget. That's more important, in my opinion," Griffith said.

"We actually have a fair amount of parking. We just don't use it correctly," Massengale said. He explained that they are looking at changes that can be made for the safety and convenience of downtown parking.
