Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas wants girls under the age of 18 to have permission from their parents before getting an abortion. Gohmert submitted the Parental Notification and Intervention Act last week and it has been referred to committee according to the Houston Chronicle.

The Parental Notification and Intervention Act, introduced last week and referred to committee, would make it illegal for any clinic to perform an abortion on an underage person without permission from their parents at least four days before the procedure is scheduled to occur.

Gohmert said it is “imperative” for a parent to be involved in making difficult decisions like abortion in which they have their child’s best interests at heart, according to The Hill.

“It is my commitment to continue pushing for legislation that promises to protect our most vulnerable, our unborn children,” he added. “The implementation of this bill will ultimately save lives and give control back to the very parents who must approve their children taking aspirin.”

The bill excepts minors seeking abortions from this law if there is a medical emergency that affects them, or if parental notification is not possible due to the medical emergency. Compliance must also be entered into the medical records of the minor.
