I am a non-traditional student.

For many reasons -- kid, career, finances, or whatever. Suffice to say, I'm not 18-22, but I'm still pursuing my bachelor's degree for Creative Writing at Texas Tech University. It's my passion, it's what I love, and I am so grateful that I have a career that makes sense with this degree. I'm proud to say I'm currently a senior with good academic standing.

But do I want to go on campus? Hell no. Even though campus is gorgeous and alive with beautiful works of public art, lovely landscaping and stunning Spanish-style architecture. But I work full time. I have other obligations. Driving, parking and attending class at 1 p.m. on a Monday is not only super inconvenient, it's practically impossible with my work schedule. I have a radio show to do.

I've attended many classes on campus and they were all great experiences. However, Distance Learning is tailor-made for people like me. It's arduous; it's a lot of work and discipline. You must pay close attention to emails, deadlines and practically live on Blackboard (TTU's online system to manage classes).

Despite the stress and hard work, it's all worth it, because I'll be able to finish my degree without sacrificing my job, family, or sanity.

Follow your dreams and don't let geography or time keep you from accomplishing your goals. If a degree happens to be one of those dreams, I highly recommend you look into distance courses at Texas Tech. Here's a link, and good luck to you, fearless champion.
