HOUSTON, TEXAS - 34-year-old Houston funeral home worker Amber Paige Laudermilk has been charged with abuse of a corpse, a felony in the state of Texas, and is currently booked into the Harris County Jail after allegedly mutilating the dead body of a sex offender.

Reports say that Amber used a scalpel to cut off the genitals of a deceased sex offender, 58-year-old Charles Rodriguez. Two other employees of Memorial Mortuary & Crematory say she also stabbed him and placed his dismembered penis in his mouth.

Rodriguez received 10 years of deferred adjudication after he was charged with sexual assault in 2001. He died of natural causes at a hospital in Houston last January.

Harris Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen said, "This case is about two troubled people: the victim who was a registered sex offender and the defendant, who is accused of viciously attacking his dead body. No matter what one thinks of his life, the law requires that he be treated with dignity in death. “I don’t know the suspect’s past, but we have the utmost empathy for anyone who has been the victim of a sexual assault or is the family or friend of someone who has been the victim of a sexual assault. The facts clearly indicate she was angry, and I hope after this is resolved in the courts, she gets the help she needs."

The sex offender's past behavior is likely to blame for the funeral employee's vicious attack on his corpse. It's hard not to empathize with her, especially if you or someone you love has been the victim of sexual violence; however, it's still not okay to treat a corpse with anything but the utmost respect when you've been given the trusted position of laying them to rest.
