While combing through an article about foods Texas is known for, I stumbled across a very "Texas" dessert. It took a moment, but I eventually came to agree that they were 100% correct about the most iconic dessert.

Sure, pecan pie ranked higher, but there's a good reason why I downgrade it to number two. Pecan pie is amazing, wonderful, and one of my most favorite things in the world, but it's a little seasonal.

So what's the winner here? Texas sheet cake. It's a shame it doesn't have a more iconic name than that, but you probably know exactly what I'm talking about. It's a chocolate sheet cake with crushed/diced pecans on top. For me, there is something almost caramelly about the result of the combination.

I tried to find a "Texas Dessert" to dethrone the Texas sheet cake, and all of the desserts mentioned just didn't cut it. I saw buttermilk pie, peach cobbler, and even funnel cake mentioned over and over, but here in the Lone Star State, it comes down to those two pecan-based desserts.

Texas sheet cake is not only a family favorite in a lot of homes, but it was also a staple over every single cafeteria and buffet that used to rule the restaurant scene in the Lone Star State

I will put one suggestion in here that was not listed anywhere, and that's Bluebell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream. One could argue though that scoop of Bluebell would just be dynamite next to some Texas sheet cake or a slice of pecan pie.
