It's flu season in Texas and we've got it bad. Right now, Texas is reporting a higher positivity rate than the rest of the United States. Between January 12th and January 18th, Texas had a 34% positivity rate, statewide.

The national trend was currently a 25% positivity rate for the same time frame.

No good.

If you feel sick, go to the doctor and stay home.

According to the CDC, an estimated 6,300 to 52,000 people die from the flu each year. The numbers vary depending on what viruses are circulating and other factors that make it worse for someone who catches it.

Between 2022 and 2023, there were 21,000 flu-related deaths, which was a huge jump from 2020 to 2021, where only 748 deaths were caused by the flu, which is probably due in part to the social distancing during the COVID pandemic.

Stay away from the elderly and anyone with a compromised immune system, and be sure to use every caution to help stop the spread to those who are especially at risk.

Here are some ways to prevent the flu:

Flu vaccines

Hand washing

Cleaning surfaces with disinfectant

Avoid sharing food and drinks

Make sure you get your vitamins in! Eat fruits and veggies!

Take vitamin D

Exercise regularly
