Has it always been this bad, or are we just now noticing how many Lubbock pets are being carelessly discarded all over town? Just yesterday, this poor dog was dropped off in front of the Family Dollar in Briercroft Center, behind the United on 50th Street. Not only does it look downright terrified, but it also looks like it's still just a puppy, maybe even one that somebody used to love. It even has a collar on.

It's enough to make you cry. Can you imagine being thrown away like this?

You hop into the truck with your human for what you think is a fun ride and then are simply left in front of a store. You watch them drive away. Surely they will be back for you, right?

No. They don't come back.

The rain pours. People pass you by, busy with their day at the shopping center. You cling to hope that your human will return and take you home to the family you loved. You didn't mean to chew up that pair of shoes or potty on the rug. Is it your fault you've been left there alone to fend for yourself?

It's disgusting, guys. It's just truly disgusting. People in Lubbock are tossing their pets out like trash. The shelters are full, and there aren't enough of us out there adopting perfectly good dogs and cats. You don't need to buy a special breed. You don't need to breed more dogs, either.

We have got to get this under control.

Just yesterday, I wrote a follow-up article about a kitten that was literally thrown from a moving vehicle onto Loop 289. Who thinks this is okay? It's abhorrent and shameful.

Please, please, please, from the bottom of my heart, I am begging you, PLEASE, spay and neuter your pets. It is NOT that expensive, and if you cannot afford to spay and neuter your pets, DO NOT BRING ONE HOME. Do not give puppies and kittens as gifts to people that don't want them or to people that cannot care for them. We are creating a massive problem and we have got to stop this madness.

Shame on anyone that thinks it's okay to treat animals this way.

If you are unable to care for your pet, do NOT just dump them off. You are making things even worse. Please, get in touch with a no-kill shelter in our area and make appropriate arrangements. If you just need help buying food, there are tons of resources online that can help you get some free dog and cat food. There are a million other things you can do before you do something like this. Please stop adding to this problem and be part of the solution.
