How Lubbock Taught Me to Appreciate “Boring”
Some folks think living in Lubbock is boring, and honestly, I used to agree. Most of us couldn't wait to get out of here after high school. We don’t have a skyline, a beach, or even a theme park. But, somewhere between all the nothingness, a little spark of creativity grew within me, and I began making my own fun.
What about you? Not so much? That's okay...
A Little Wisdom
Ruth Burke said, "Only boring people get bored," and that's become my mantra. Boring isn’t necessarily bad, though. Boring is peace. Boring is space. Boring is breathing room to discover yourself and what makes you tick. A lack of exciting things to do and see forces you to use your imagination in ways you never would otherwise.
The Few, The Proud
The people around me in Lubbock tend to make their own fun, and honestly, sometimes it's almost a blessing to be from somewhere so seemingly dull. My friends and I have embraced the silence and used it as the soundtrack to our creativity. Boredom has become an inspiration to us. Writers, poets, musicians, comedians, filmmakers, photographers, and other creative minds are thriving here in a world they have created all on their own.
You Know Them
If you haven't noticed, you may have never knowingly encountered their many circles. But, chances are, you've come across the least boring folks in town, whether you knew it or not. When you see local art shows, theater productions, concerts, open mic nights, spoken word sessions, and such, I invite you to take a chance on broadening your horizons and tapping into a community that is far from boring.

Creative Minds
These are the people who help get your creative juices flowing. They might rekindle a flame in you that died long ago, back when your folks told you to be more reasonable when it came to choosing what you would do for a living. So many of us gave up on our dreams the second we saw a few dollar signs.
Support, Support, Support!
While the life you chose probably pays the bills, you may still feel void of excitement and curiosity, especially with nowhere to go and not much to do in Lubbock, Texas. Supporting folks like these when you can will help us build a more beautiful and exciting place.
Easy To Miss
The artistic minds of Lubbock are hard at work. Behind the scenes, they are building a more inviting and diverse place for us in so many ways. Unfortunately, they are often overlooked. Instead of a night of local theater, you may tend to opt for a chain restaurant with an arcade. This doesn't help Lubbock thrive. It puts dollars in the pockets of people far away who couldn't care less about you and the future of our city. Let's do better. Opt for a local activity instead. It will enrich your mind and the minds of your children to see creative folks in action.
Help Out
Please, take the time to appreciate what the creative minds of Lubbock bring to the table. Chip in a few bucks on their projects. Be someone who helps them achieve their goals. By doing so, you are helping to build a better and more alluring Hub City for future generations.
The Goal?
The goal is to make people want to live here and not to send them packing the moment they graduate. Let's make this place more beautiful, more fun, and more inviting by supporting those around us with quirky visions and pockets full of dreams.
