$14 Million Worth of Meth Found Hidden in Your Favorite Veggies At Texas Border
PHARR, Texas - A shipment of fresh veggies found at the border was found to contain over $14 million worth of methamphetamine, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
More than 1,600 pounds of drugs were found among bell peppers and cucumbers at the Pharr International Bridge on April 11th when officers inspected a tractor trailer crossing the Mexico border. A canine team and non-intrusive tools uncovered 300 packages of meth hidden inside the trailer.
In total, the drugs weighed a staggering 1,635 pounds.
The cargo trailer and drugs were seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and a criminal investigation is now underway.
This certainly isn't the first time CBP has found drugs hiding among your favorite produce at the border. Just last November, a whopping $31 million worth of drugs were found concealed in a shipment of serrano peppers.
For every shipment that is caught, you kind of have to wonder how many aren't.
You'd think drug busts this big would slow people down, but it just doesn't work that way. If there's a will, there's a way. A quick peek out my window in downtown Lubbock, Texas, reveals dozens of homeless people strung out on drugs.
These massive captures are but a drop in the bucket. If only we could convince people that their lives were worth quitting drugs, but that's pretty hard to do when you look at the bleak reality of day-to-day life in the United States. I can't say I blame them for needing an escape...
