Is This The End For Toys “R” Us?
Big box stores have had a rough go of it the last few years with Amazon and other online retailers continue to grow. The toy industry is no different. Numerous outlets are reporting today that Toys "R" Us could shut down all U.S. locations next week.
In 2017, the company announced it was closing some stores in the U.S. including here in Texas. The retailer entered bankruptcy in September of 2017 and was able to get a $3.1 billion dollar loan during the restructuring stage. According to Bloomberg, Toys "R" Us was hit with a slow Christmas season and they haven't been able to recover.
While there is still a chance another company could purchase Toys "R" Us, hopes are fading. Toys "R" Us was founded in 1948 and grew into the largest toy store chain.
The news of Toys "R" Us closing is also bad news for the toy industry in general. Toy-related stocks are down as of Friday morning and CNBC reports that 10-15% of all toy sales could be lost forever.
We will keep you up to date on if the Lubbock location of Toys "R" Us closes.
