The National Weather Service office in Lubbock, Texas has issued a High Wind Warning and Red Flag Warning for most of today, Wednesday, April 10th.

Westerly wind speeds will become sustained between 35-55mph, with gusts reaching up to 75mph. Strongest wind speeds are expected between 3 and 8 p.m. on Wednesday, which will also produce blowing dust across the area. Reduced visibility and impacts to high profile vehicles are the primary concern for motorists.

Critical fire weather is anticipated this afternoon as the wind speeds and dry fuel will be conducive for igniting and rapidly spreading wildfire, especially in areas of grassland where old vegetation has dried out but still left on the ground.

Extreme caution should be taken for any work being done on elevated surfaces, such as roofs or electric poles. Outdoor construction should maintain a plan to respond to any sparks from equipment that might create a fire due to the critical wildfire danger. Smokers are encouraged to properly dispose of smoking materials, rather than throwing cigarette butts out of a window.
