Xcel Energy released a statement today encouraging customers to reduce electricity usage this summer to avoid straining power supplies.

Tips to conserving energy include setting thermostats to 78 degrees, installing compact fluorescent light bulbs, running washing machines, dryers and dishwashers with full loads, changing air conditioning unit filters, and using ceiling fans to cool your home. Following these tips can save you significant money when it comes to monthly bills as well.

Power shortages in the ERCOT power grid in downstate Texas have raised some concerns among stakeholders and customers of Xcel, however Xcel operates on a separate grid from ERCOT. With the addition of more generation and transmission facilities Xcel’s capacity to serve the area is continuing to grow.

“We nevertheless want to help customers better manage their electricity usage, while lessening the overall strain on our system,” said Riley Hill, president and CEO of Southwestern Public Service Company, an Xcel Energy company.
