Women's Protective Services of Lubbock will be hosting their 16th Annual John Deere Tractor Benefit Drawing this Saturday (August 22) at the Lubbock Civic Center beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Lindsay Rushing (Board Member), Jason Henry (Executive Director) and Steven Garcia (Coordinator of Community Education and Outreach) joined Lubbock's First News on Thursday to talk about the event.

"It's the biggest event of the year for us," said Garcia.

Guests will enjoy a meal catered by Top Tier Catering, entertainment by The Rex Thomas Band and there will be some silent auction items.

Rushing, who was born and raised in Lubbock, moved away for several years and then later moved back. When she returned to Lubbock, she wanted to do something to help the community and get involved in something.

"I think that domestic violence is a cause that doesn't get enough attention," said Rushing. "Fourteen percent of the state's domestic violence occurs here in Lubbock. That doesn't sound like a whole lot but when Lubbock makes up 2 percent of the state's population, domestic violence is something that occurs more in this area than we might think."

Currently, WPS has 43 paid staff members and about as many volunteers, but they're always looking for more. WPS has solved 3,500 cases of domestic violence.

"We're a massive shelter," said Henry. "Anybody who would like to volunteer is welcome to get involved."
