A Winter Weather Advisory continues through 12 Noon Monday across Lubbock and the South Plains.

Before 5p, Sunday evening, freezing drizzle and rain lightly came down across parts of Lubbock creating slick roads. Chris Due reported an accident had occurred on the Marsha Sharp Freeway near the overpass for West Loop 289 just after 4p.

Sunday afternoon, TxDOT dispatched crews to highways and major roads across the South Plains to start de-icing efforts.

Later on Sunday night, one to two inches of sleet and snow will fall across Lubbock and the rest of the South Plains.   With temperatures remaining in the teens and low 20s across the region, driving conditions will get worse Sunday night into Monday morning.

TxDOT reminds drivers to follow these precautions for driving in icy conditions:

  • Reduce speed. Speed limits are based on normal road and weather conditions, not winter road conditions. Do not use cruise control.
  • Maintain at least three times the normal following distance on snow or ice.
  • Watch carefully for personnel and equipment treating roadways, and stay at least 200 feet back from road crews.
  • Use extra caution on bridges, ramps, overpasses and shaded areas as they tend to freeze first.
  • Carry extra warm coats, gloves and boots in case you get stranded.
  • If you start to slide, ease off the gas pedal or brakes. Steer into the direction of the skid until you feel you have regained traction, and then straighten your vehicle.
