With all the news centered on Nintendo's "Pokemon Go" app and some local safety concerns, we asked Lubbock Police Department Public Information Officer Lt. Ray Mendoza how local police are advising citizens to safely catch 'em all.

"Our concern with the app is safety," Mendoza told KFYO News. "People using the app tend to focus on the mobile device and ignore their surroundings. Situational awareness is something we always push."

Lt. Mendoza added: "Distracted driving also continues to be a dangerous activity. If you drive, put the phone down."

Obviously, people in Lubbock are being drawn into the game, but it's important to remember that even when you're trying to hatch a 10 km egg you need to stay aware of your surroundings.

Lt. Mendoza's remarks follow TxDOT's use of the hashtag #WeShouldntHaveToTellYouThis when advising Texas motorists not to play "Pokemon Go" while driving.

So stay safe out there, Pokemon Trainers, and good luck catching 'em all.
