There is much to cluck about at this week’s Lubbock City Council meeting. Council members will discuss two items concerning “urban” chickens.

One item would allow chicken hens to be kept on residential properties by redefining the birds similarly to dogs. A newly drafted ordinance, if adopted, could allow for four hens to be kept outright, with additional fowl requiring a multi-pet permit from Animal Services and an exception from the Zoning Board of Adjustment.

The amendment will also address issues arising from raising hens such as enclosures and coop requirements; storage of feed; and sanitation requirements.

Currently no species of fowl are allowed as pets within the City of Lubbock.
