An area hospital has earned a national achievement again.

University Medical Center has been verified again as a Level 1 Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons.

UMC’s Level 1 Trauma Center is the only one between Fort Worth and El Paso.

“To achieve verification, a trauma center must demonstrate the highest ability to care for severely injured patients, from pre-hospital phase to rehabilitation,” said Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President Dr. Mike Ragain. “We’re proud of the service our employees and medical staff provide the region. Their dedication to quality makes all of us safer.”

The ACS’s Committee on Trauma was established in 1987, and promotes development of trauma centers to provide optimal care for seriously injured patients.
