Monday, emergency crews were called to a crash between a car and a semi-truck south of Lubbock just after 10 a.m.

The crash reportedly occurred just north of the intersection of Highway 87 and FM 41. A 2007 Chevy passenger vehicle, driven by 41-year-old Sicily Payne of Lubbock, was heading east on FM 41 when she failed to yield the right of way when crossing US 87.

That’s when a northbound Peterbilt truck tractor pulling a tanker trailer struck the Chevy and overturned in the northbound traffic lane. The Chevy spin out and landed in the center median.

The driver of the truck tractor, 71-year-old James Winford of Lamesa, was taken to a Lubbock hospital with unspecified injuries, but was said to be alert and communicating. The driver of the Chevy, Sicily Payne, was also taken to a local hospital and was last listed Monday evening to be in critical but stable condition.

The Texas Department of Transportation, Lubbock law enforcement, and Lubbock Fire Rescue all responded to the accident. Precautions were taken when disposing of the wreckage, as the truck tractor was carrying propane tanks, none of which were reported to be punctured or leaking.
