Tunnel mystery in Lubbock neighborhood

A north Lubbock resident has discovered a tunnel running under his house.

Lee Smithwick was watering his yard when a hole appeared in his front lawn.

Upon closer inspection, the tunnel was found to be braced with rail road ties, with one of the ties broken, causing the collapse.  

Several local historians have looked into the hole and have determined it is not a cold war era bunker, but in fact may be related to turn of the century rail road construction.

City of authorities will be back on site this morning to determine what, if anything can be done about additional collapses of the tunnel’s roof.
