Three were shot today after a Slaton couple came home to find an armed burglar in their house. 69-year-old Fred Melcher is in critical condition after a firefight with the intruder at around 1:30pm on West Lynn Street in Slaton. His partner 51 year old Edith Ayers was shot in the stomach and is in serious condition. The intruder was shot and killed.

Neighbors say Ayers ran across the street and told neighbors that she’d been shot. Lubbock County Sheriff Kelly Row told KAMC 28 news that Melcher knew the intruder. Melcher was shot in the chest and also received a head wound after struggling with the intruder. The intruder’s name has not yet been released.
