An associate professor with Texas Tech’s Department of Animal and Food Sciences has been awarded an Excellence in Teaching award from the United States Department of Agriculture.

According to the USDA, the award is one of six regional awards presented to those who exhibit innovation, excellence, and dedication to the growth of the nation’s food and agricultural system and its students.

Chance Brooks, associate professor at Texas Tech, received the award at the annual meeting of the Association of Public Land-Grant Universities in Orlando Florida on Sunday, November 2. He also received $2,000 to award to the college or university of his choosing.

The Meadow, Texas, native - who holds two degrees from Texas Tech - said it was an honor to work for the university.

“I thoroughly enjoy teaching at my alma mater and I greatly appreciate the support I have received from Texas Tech, the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and the Department of Animal and Food Sciences,” said Brooks. “My hope is that I represent the university’s mission to advance knowledge through innovate and creative teaching, research and service.”

Brooks began working for Tech in 2003. He currently teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in meat science, and also researches meat packing and food safety.
