A Texas Tech junior thrower has broken a school record.

Kole Weldon broke a 12-year-old school weight throw record with a heave of 19.68 meters to finish first overall.

Weldon’s throw beat the 2002 record of 19.32 meters set by Jason Young, who was a 2012 Olympian in the discus.

“What a great performance for him,” said Texas Tech Head Coach Wes Kittley. “He had some great throws tonight. He has a lot more in him, but I’m glad to see him picking up his performance in the weight throw.”

The Jacksboro, Texas native entered the opening night of competition at the New Mexico Classic ranked seventh nationally in the shotput, which will take place on Saturday.

With his weight throw performance on Saturday, Weldon moved to No. 2 on the Big 12 list in the weight throw.

Also, Tech junior Cierra White clocked in a new career-best 23.52 seconds in the 200-meter dash. She holds three of the top five school performances in the event.
