Texas Tech Fans Are No Different Than Other Fans

On Tuesday Dan Jackson of KCBD-TV commented on Texas Tech fans during his "Consider This" segment. I would say that most of the time I agree with Dan's segments, but on this one I believe he was way off base.

In his Consider This segment, Jackson claims that Tech fans have "gained a notorious reputation as overbearing and obnoxious". Jackson basically begs Tech fans to show the conference that Texas Tech can be gracious hosts and good fans. Jackson also tells fans to beat A&M, but to do it with class.

Has Dan Jackson ever been to a football game or sporting event outside of Lubbock? If not, I would encourage

him to do so because I have news for him. Our fans at Texas Tech are no different than fans at the University of Texas, Texas A&M, or even the fans of the Dallas Cowboys. You see, it's a football game not a tennis match. You will always have opposing fans calling each other obnoxious. You will always have booing at games and you will always have people that are loud. It's football and people are passionate about their teams.

Now, is there a line? Of course. At no time should fights break out and students don't need to cuss during the fight song. Has Tech had problems in the past with that? Yes, but guess what? So have other teams!

I would say that if Texas Tech has a reputation it could be due to the fact that some in our media decides to trash Texas Tech fans whenever they see fit. People on message boards complain about coming to Lubbock and all of a sudden a guy on TV thinks he needs to tell Tech fans to be nice.

Jones AT&T Stadium has been called one of the toughest stadiums to play in, and I don't know about you but I'm pretty happy about that. Do I want Texas Tech fans to be overbearing and obnoxious? Hell yes I do. Yell, boo, and be loud. Don't be gracious when the teams hit the field. Texas Tech isn't trying to date A&M, they are trying to win a football game. Be courteous to our out of town guests, but of course I don't have to say that since 99.9% of Tech fans are courteous.

So Dan reconsider this, football fans are annoying and loud all over the country. Texas Tech doesn't have a problem. Tech fans love their team and want to see them win. 99.9% of Tech fans are courteous to Aggie fans. And most importantly, most Tech fans are going to the games to have fun not to act classless.

If Dan wants to do a commentary over obnoxious and overbearing people, what about looking at YFL, Soccer, and Little League parents? I've had far more calls on my show about some of those parents than Tech fans.
