Katharine Hayhoe, director of Texas Tech’s Climate Science Center, received the award Monday, November 17, at a ceremony in Washington D.C. Hayhoe was named to the 2014 TIME 100 list of the most influential people in the world earlier in 2014.

“I am honored to be named to a list that has always included so many outstanding leaders in the fields of climate science and sustainability,” Hayhoe said. “We need global thinkers from every continent and field of study to help us prepare for a changing climate, and to develop the technological and policy innovations we need to leave behind the outdated and polluting sources of energy that are causing this problem.”

The editors of Foreign Policy magazine focused on events and individuals who shook up the global order “for better or worse” and named Hayhoe to a category called “The Naturals”

According to Texas Tech, Hayhoe’s research focuses on assessing impacts of climate change at a regional-to-local scale. She is also a principal investigator for the Department of the Interior’s South-Central Climate Science Center.
