Former Texas Tech baseball coach Kal Segrist passed away Friday (June 26). He was 84.

Segrist led the Texas Tech baseball team for 16 seasons (1968-1983), where the team racked up 317 wins -- a school record for the time and the second all-time in the school's baseball history.

Prior to coaching at Texas Tech, Segrist played baseball at the University of Texas. During his time as a Longhorn, Segrist went to the 1951 national championship, was named to the College World Series all-tournament team and made the All-SWC team.

Segrist went on to make his professional debut with the New York Yankees in 1952. In 1955, he played a season with the Baltimore Orioles.

"We lost a good friend today and a great Red Raider," said Texas Tech head coach Tim Tadlock. "We are going to miss Kal dearly. Please keep Kal’s family and his wife Becky in your prayers at this time."

Segrist is survived by his wife, Becky, and children Kris, Scott, Sunny Beth and Sandy. Funeral services are pending at this time.
