A Texas Tech alumnus is now the University’s new athletics band director.

Duane Hill has been appointed as the new Texas Tech associate director of bands and director of athletic bands, meaning he will now be at the helm of the Goin’ Band from Raiderland.

The 30-year-old Hill was a drum major with the Goin’ Band, and after graduating, worked for four years at Leander High School. He came back to Lubbock and earned a master’s degree of music in conducting from Texas Tech. Hill served as the interim Goin’ Band director, and was promoted to assistant director in 2011.

“I will never forget the moment I was on the field as a freshman and I was looking at Mr. Bearden, who was the director at that time, and I thought, ‘That is exactly what I want to do,’” Hill said.

Hill plans to help with the Goin’ Band’s implementation of having the students vote on the show that the band will perform for homecoming. He also says that he would like to have fans vote via text message for the homecoming show the group will perform in 2013.

“It’s ways like this I want to get the community involved,” Hill said. “We have already started community outreach by performing at local high schools and participating in such events as the Lubbock ISD Band Extravaganza.”
