Hoping to get a head start on other GOP hopefuls, Texas U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R) announced via Twitter late Sunday night that he is running for president in 2016.

Cruz's announcement is the first official announcement from any Republican or Democrat for the 2016 election.

Cruz released a thirty-second ad on his official @TedCruz Twitter account in which he states in part, "I believe we can stand up and restore our promise. It's going to take a new generation of courageous conservatives to make America great again."

Cruz will speak Monday morning at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. The speech is expected to begin just before 9:30am, Central Time.  You'll be able to hear portions of Cruz's speech throughout the day on KFYO, including during The Chad Hasty Show, Rush Limbaugh and Pratt on Texas.

As far as other possible Republican presidential candidates, no word on any potential announcements from Rick Perry, Jeb Bush, Rand Paul, Ben Carson and Scott Walker.
