HOUSTON (AP) — Harris County sheriff's officials say a 26-year-old man awaiting trial in the 2015 killing of a woman has been found dead in his cell.

Authorities said in a statement Friday that Maytham Alsaedy committed suicide by hanging himself from a bed sheet.

He was found late Thursday by a guard who noticed that Alsaedy's cell window had been covered with newspaper. Alsaedy was taken to a Houston hospital and pronounced dead early Friday.

He had been charged with capital murder in the death of 22-year-old Kella Bracken, who was found dead in her car from a stab wound. Authorities say Alsaedy had confessed to the killing.

His death was reported to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.
