Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sat down with The Chad Hasty Show to discuss several legal issues before the state of Texas, including the defense of marriage act.

In March, Texas filed a lawsuit relating to the Family Medical Leave Act, suing the Obama administration for attempting to expand coverage for same-sex partners under that law. Paxton touched on the history of this subject, including the passage of the Defense of Marriage Act in Texas.

AG Paxton explained that the state found itself in the position of having to defend its own constitution.

"Here we are ten years later having to defend that law," said AG Paxton. "My first week in office we were in the 5th circuit defending our constitution and our constitutional amendment that the people of this state passed. So it's been really amazing that we're in this position of having to defend our constitution."

Also discussed was the recent issue surrounding the banning of certain ammunition by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and how Paxton was one of 22 AGs from around the country that sent a letter to the BATF suggesting that they not move forward with implementing the new rules.

"As relates to Second Amendment, First Amendment and any issue as related to the Constitution, vigilance is required," said AG Paxton.

Paxton also spoke about President Obama's executive actions on illegal immigration, and how the states need to defend the constitution and the rule of law.

"If we care about the Constitution, if we care about the rule of law, if we care about freedom, if we care about liberty, if we want the Constitution followed, if we don't want one person in office deciding everything, then I think this is necessary to preserve liberty, and to preserve our constitutional form of government," AG Paxton said.
