Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott to File for Stay for Candidate Filing Periods

Just before 7 o’clock this evening, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott announced he file a motion for a Stay concerning all candidate filing deadlines for Texas Senate, Texas House and U.S. House of Representative primary candidates.
Currently, the deadline to file for candidacy for the March Primary Election is December 15.
The motion is in reaction to a three-judge federal panel in San Antonio changing the boundaries of Texas Senate, Texas House and U.S. House of Representative districts.
According to the Attorney General’s office, Monday’s filing will further Attorney General Abbott’s stated goals of reducing uncertainty surrounding Texas’ 2012 elections and protecting the integrity of Texas elections. Neither the State’s request for a stay of the filing deadlines nor the stay issued Friday by the U.S. Supreme Court relate to or delay the filing periods or elections for any other office. Only the Texas Senate, Texas House of Representatives and U.S. House of Representatives elections are affected.
