Some organizations and interest groups are announcing support for a referendum to allow Texans to vote on casino gambling in the Lone Star State.

The Texas Association of Business has announced support for Senate Joint Resolution 64, authored by State Senator John Carona of Dallas, which proposes a Texas Constitutional amendment to allow 21 casinos across the state and create a gaming commission.

The TAB says that if approved, SJR 64 could allow for the creation of a minimum of 75,000 jobs and $8.5 billion in economic growth for Texas.

“We know the potential economic benefits for Texas should this issue be approved,” said TAB President and CEO Bill Hammond. “It is time to turn off the vacuum coming from our bordering states that is sucking money out Texans’ pockets for those states’ own benefit and bring that money home.”

Carona has stated that casinos, race tracks, and Native American groups support his constitutional amendment.
